On November 8th there was a vote to increase Liberty Public Schools property tax rate. The tax rate increase was to help with funding of a new football stadium and added classroom space. The varsity football games for both Liberty and Liberty North are usually held at the William Jewell Football Stadium. But this past year they changed division making some games on different nights, which conflicted with the usual Friday night games. Because of this, some games had to be played on Thursday, which always had a lot less people attend. Also we pay so much money a year to use that stadium, why not build our own and in the long run not have to make any more payments.
The vote did eventually end with a result of it not passing. It came out to 51.5% voting no, and the other 48.5% voting yes. It has been said the reason for people voting no is that they did not want to raise their taxes. But in the long run it did disappoint many people.
When asked what her thoughts on the tax increase not passing, Nancy Ngo, a sophomore at Liberty High School stated, “It’s depressing because now some of the games have to be on Thursdays and those are school nights so it is less convenient. And I think it would be cool to actually have a home game at our actual high school and not somewhere else.”
When asked if he would have voted yes or no, Jason Volkmann, a freshman at LJHS who played on the freshman football team this year stated, “ yes, because I don’t like the fact that varsity games will have Thursday night football games, and we need more space because Liberty is growing and plus not as many people will be attending games because it’s on a school night.”
Leigh Perkins, a mom of three Liberty School District students, stated, “I was disappointed by the tax levy results. With our school district’s continued growth, I believe it was necessary to provide the best student experience.”
Hopefully we will see this proposal on the ballot once more in the near future.
