Get Yo’ Break On!

January 31, 2012

Ever since Christmas break ended most students have already began the countdown till spring break. However not everyone spends their spring break the same. Some people go on big vacations or travel somewhere far away, others choose to stay at home. For those of you who are undecided on what you’re going to do for spring break here are some ideas.

One great way to spend spring break would be to go on a trip. It’s a good way to get away from the stressful life at home and take a break for a bit.

Tori Fowler and her family are going to Mexico over this year’s spring break. When asked what her favorite part was about traveling for spring break she answered “getting away from Liberty for a while.”

Another option would be to go visit your grandparents. It’s always a good thing to spend time with family and reconnect with family members you might not have seen in a while.

Chris Marnell said that he would be spending his spring break visiting his grandparents. He said he loved to visit them because, ” I don’t get to see them very often and it’s good I catch up with them.”

For those of you who will not be going anywhere over spring break, there are plenty of fun things you can do at home. For example, you could go to the movie theater and see a movie you’ve been wanting to see, call up a friend and hang out or just spend time with your family.

Morgan dryer will be spending this year’s spring break at home. When asked what she loved most about being home for spring break she answered, “I get to play volleyball.”

I hope you found this information helpful. And that you all have a wonderful 2012 spring break!  This year’s spring break is March 19-23.  Enjoy!

We meet again. For all of those who wanted a Harbaugh Bowl, we all apologize for the disappointment. A missed field goal for Baltimore, and San Francisco with an overtime loss on Sunday. At least Tom Brady will get another chance at Eli come Super bowl 43. It was different back in 2008 though. Eli, the clutch choker trying to find his first ring, and Tom Brady, being Mr. Unstoppable with a perfect 16-0 record. Brady was on his way to making history, and trying to make more in the Super Bowl.

This time, each team has suffered from that Super Bowl game. None have made it to the big stage since then. This year, the Giants clinching a playoff berth in their win against the Cowboys Week 17, and the Patriots dominated with a 13-3 record. Tom Brady is having his second try at his fourth Super Bowl ring.

The New York Giants have hit their stride, two dominating wins over the Falcons and the Packers. As they got to San Fran, it was an overtime win, with the 49ers fumbling the opening kickoff in OT. Then Lawrence Tynes hit the game winning field goal, sending them to their second Super Bowl in four years. They have fired on all cylinders, their defense facing huge challenges, and Eli leading his team through an uphill battle. This will be his toughest test yet, and it will be hard to beat a team twice, in a season and in a recent Super Bowl.

And now for the Patriots. They have done great all season, finishing with a 13-3 record and home field advantage. One of their three loses were against the Giants though, with Ballard scoring for the Giants with less than 90 to clinch the victory, 24-20. A very scary offense, with many weapons including two stud tight ends, Aaron Hernandez and Rob Gronkowski, are the best duel threat tight ends in NFL history. They are huge, fast for their size, and have above average hands. Tom Brady did struggle against the Ravens though, throwing two INT’s and a quarterback rating of 57.5. Their defense did make a stand against the Ravens, playing pretty well.

So what is the pick? Not one team has a huge advantage in this one. Will it be the strengths that win the game or will the weaknesses lose it? It won’t be either, but a collective game will win the game, not one aspect of it. So what is it going to be? Patriots or Giants? Tom wins his fourth, 34-24. The defense will understand the importance of themselves in this game, and will stop Eli enough to earn the victory. Whether this happens or not, one thing is guaranteed, Super Bowl 43 will be one to remember.

Justin Bieber may not be considered a man in many eyes, besides his millions of young fans, but he is a true leader in the music industry, proving anyone can make it big no matter what their age is. No one knew the whole story till his movie, Never Say Never, came out and exposed all the work he had gone through to be where he is. After, unsuccessful attempts at winning music contests and getting people to notice him, someone over 1,500km away, finally saw him on a social networking site where the media really shapes people: YouTube.com. The media shapes people in negative and positive ways and Justin Bieber has been a victim of both. It seemed as though every boy was copying his hair cut and every girl had his T-shirts and dolls but as his fame grew, so did the media’s hate.

Magazines, blogs, and talk shows everywhere hated on Justin and gave no mercy. An account on Twitter said, “Justin Bieber is not a good singer, he’s ugly and he should not be in the music industry, he just does it for the fame!” people went crazy over this. Other Tweeters agreed and said that they wanted him to die while a few strong fans stood up for him and even some Music industry icons backed him up. Another tweeter that same day said, “I don’t care what anyone says about Justin. #yourrealfansloveyou”. The argument continued and never fully came to a rest. The media reacts to things like this and takes advantage of societies negative feelings for Justin and pushes them even further. MailOnline.com published an article revealing the details on the buzz everyone is talking about: Justin’s paternity test. Mariah Yeater, a twenty-year-old Justin Bieber fan claims the seventeen-year-old popstar is the father of her child. Justin’s lawyer quickly got in touch with Yeater’s eternity to get the situation annulled.

The media can throw its hits and punches at any celebrity but one can only dodge them for so long. Justin Bieber has handled it all exceptionally well for starting out in the business so young. He’s truly proved himself to be the man that his fans across the world expect him to be and blown everyone away. He has never broken down in public or interacted with a hating Tweeter or magazine. Justin Bieber has stayed strong and posed with his chin held high.

As you may know, The Liberty Hill’s Country Club has recently burnt down. Firefighters had receved the call just before 6 p.m. and faced two major obstacles in putting out the fire. Strong winds spread the fire quickly, and the one fire hydrant nearby was not working, forcing tanker trucks to cartwater from elsewhere. Fire officials said the fire started in the basement.  No one had quite known the reasoning of the fire, or the cause until recently.  On Jan. 11, 2012 The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Kansas City Field Division and the Missouri Division of Fire Safety’s Office of the State Fire Marshal have completed the on-scene investigation into the cause of a fire at the Liberty Hills Country Club.  The fire occurred at 19808 County Road H on Jan. 6 at 5:43 p.m.

After three days of extensive scene examination and many interviews, investigators determined the fire came from inside  the basement of the clubhouse in an area south of the Bass Pro Shop. Due to the extreme damage, it was hard for investigators to figure out the exact reasoning for the fire.  The official cause of the fire, at this time, will be “undetermined.”  A finding of undetermined does not mean that a fire investigation is closed.  If information is developed in the future to indicate or warrant further investigation, this finding can be changed. The fire caused approximately $3.5 million in damage.

So even after a horrific fire, loss of many jobs, and the unforgettable memories made, The Liberty Hills Country Club plans to rebuild and start over. And many new memories can be made in the new building.

In the Tuscan Sea, near Italy, a cruise ship recently crashed on January 13th, 2012. The big news, though, is that 23 passengers are still missing. We don’t know what kind of condition we’ll find them in, but they all have many friends and family anxiously waiting to find out more information. Divers soon after the crash started looking for these missing persons for a few weeks until it got to a point when the ship was no long accessible and too dangerous to continue.

Passengers were offered 30% off their next cruise, a little compensation for a big crash. They were also offered over $14,000 each and hospital bills would be covered, but the U.S citizens continued to sue the captain anyways.  He is being greatly questioned because of his actions; he left the passengers immediately and saved himself. He did this while knowing that his passengers never underwent the practice of what to do if the cruise liner crashed. So in the swarm of scared people, he ran to a life boat and paddled to shore. Currently, he’s on trial for whether he should be sued, because many families are upset he didn’t take responsibility and put his passengers first.

The Costa Concordia’s company headquarters is in Genoa, Italy. They crashed into the Tuscan coast near Italy. On the back of the tickets in fine print states the regulations and agreements, but they’re arguing whether or not that’s fair. And they’re debating whether the fact that the crash took place in Italy matters. And with 16 deaths due to the Costa Concordia crash with at least 23 passengers still missing, it’s being taken very seriously; this trial is going to decide what kind of compensation the passengers on the boat will receive.

Passengers boarded the ship on January 13th, 2012 and the crash occurred 2 and a half hours later. The crash affected many people on board, and continues to affect some families of missing people, and those that died. Hopefully they can help everyone back to full recovery!

When you think of knitting you commonly think of your grandma going, “Knit one, pearl two,” that’s just one of the many ways of knitting. But that’s not always the case…

To begin you’ll need yarn, about 108 yard to make a scarf five feet long, and 15 “stitches,” wide, and what your preferred size of knitting needles. I recommend size 12 needles for beginners. All can be purchased at Michael’s or a craft store.

Now to start knitting;

1) Create a slip knot, this is done by making a loop and then pulling the end of the string that is connected to the ball of yarn.

2) Put the needle through the loop and adjust the loop to the needle’s by pulling on the end that is connect to the ball of yarn.

3) Time to cast your yarn on, do this by wrapping the yarn from the end that is connect to the ball around your finger and thumb, and then slip the needle into to the loop, once the loop/stitch is on repeat until you have 15 loops/stitches.

4) To start knitting, hold the needle with the loops/stitches in your left hand, and the other needle with nothing in your right hand. Take the need in your right hand; insert it into the first top loop, now placing it behind the left hand needle. Taking the yarn connected to the ball wrap it around above the loop your needle is in, going left to right around, do this only once, wrap this only around the right needle.

5) Finally take the right needle and tuck it under the loop bonding the two needles, and remove it from the needle on the left. Make sure not to drop the stitch.

6) Repeat steps 4 and 5 until your scarf is to the length desired.

Now when you are done, here is how to finish your masterpiece!

1) Knit two stitches over like you steps 4 and 5 above.

2) Once complete, take the bottom stitch and pull it over the one above it.

3) Knit another stitch over to the right needle to where there is a total of two, and do step number two.

4) When you have come to where there is only one left, cut a decent amount of yarn, about six inches, and tie a few knots at the end to officially complete your scarf!

Knitting takes tons of practice, so do not be discourage if you mess up. Good luck, and happy knitting!

Jacob Barnes, fifteen-year-old freshman at South Valley Junior High, has made a movement in the issue of bullying. Jacob has published a video on YouTube titled, “Bullying: Do Something About It”, (To watch: http://youtu.be/QYD46EZhcSs). This video has gone viral, spreading from the Kansas City/Liberty area to around the nation. Fox 4 News has reached out to Jacob, to possibly feature his video. Many of his peers and others are helping Jacob spread his word to the public, emphasizing how big of an issue bullying is. We are hoping to get many icons such as Lady GaGa, Justin Bieber, and Ellen to see his video so that they can support this cause.

Jacob has a personal attachment to this cause. He has seen bullying, and he did not like that many of them didn’t have someone to stand up for them. This issue is valued over others to Jacob because, to him, it is the biggest issue he has seen in his lifetime. Many of us remember the beautiful Becca Howard who committed suicide; Jacob was a friend of hers. One of his friends had called him wanting to commit suicide as well. Jacob was not going to let this happen, by supporting him and talking him out of the possible regretful decision. Bullying is a big deal and needs to be taken seriously, because of its consequences. The alarming number of 85% of people do nothing to decrease bullying.

While many support Jacob, others believe negatively. Jacob’s response to this was, “Some people are saying I’m doing it for attention which is not even close to being true. Also some kids made a video about me saying I bullied them in the past, but I have never even talked to those kids or been around them. I just handle it by ignoring everyone, because it’s sad people want to bully for trying to end bullying. It just helps me prove my point.”

Many people are starting to open their eyes on how wide spread the  problem of bullying really is. Big “YouTubers,” and musicians Megan and Liz [Mace] have wrote a song called, “Are You Happy Now?” in this video it shows how bullying hurts people, and that you can see past difference’s of others. There are many other videos, PSAs, and such out there describing the statistics and effects bullying has on people. Bullying isn’t just pushing someone around, it also can be sending a mean text message or starting a rumor.

Jacob has started, Together We Can Change the World, or TWCCW. It takes one to stand up for a cause, and two to make a movement. Keep up the amazing work, Jacob. What you have done has helped many kids and other people believe there are others out there who will support them and believe in them. With this movement, we can help decrease these numbers, and change the world.

This is a piece I wrote for my Comm. Arts class, it’s about what kind of person it takes to overcome hard times in life and those who cannot. It’s also about whether or not people deserve what they have to deal with and worry about in life.

The human life is full of decisions; to love or to hate, to give up or to move forward, to live or to die. Our life is like the human heart, when we’re threatened, we respond in one of two ways; we either run or we attack. There’s a scientific term for this, called “Fight, or Flight” It’s the difference between those who are defeated and those who carry on in times of suffrage and tragedy. The real question is, can we control whether we run into these decisions in our life or not.

The term “life-changing decisions” has no definite definition. Your life could change on whether you decide to sleep in an extra fifteen minutes and get to school late, your life could change by the decision you make to eat lunch or not today. Richard Bach once said, “All we see of someone at any moment is a snapshot of their life, there in riches or poverty, in joy or despair. Snapshots don’t show the million decisions that led to that moment.” It is believed that each decision you make, even in the smallest form, leads up to making the biggest decisions of your life.

Captain John Ferrier was a Christian man, and lived by the “I’m third” life-style. He put God first, others second, and himself third. He was a member of the Minute Men pilots. During a routine show, on June 7, 1958, Ferrier’s plane started rolling, and he was spinning towards a small town. With plenty of time to bail out, Ferrier realizes he has two choices. He chooses to stay in the plane long enough to steer it away from the small town and take his own life in a small nearby lake. Captain John Ferrier lived a fair life and put himself last, there were no wrong decisions he could have made in his life to deserve to make one like this. Life may not give you your biggest life decisions based upon your small ones that led up to it.

In a world where people are unsure if they get what they deserve or if life just throws what it wants at you, we do know one thing; there’s a difference between those who give up, and those who continue on in hard times, in sad times, and in times where you just don’t know what to do. You cannot control what life serves you, but you can control how you deal with it. Our life is like the human heart, you just have to keep beating.

The most anticipated college football game of the season was last Monday night. The BCS Championship Bowl was held in New Orleans.  Many fans believed this game would finally determine who was the nation’s best college football team. The two rivals, University of Alabama and Louisiana State University faced off in this highly awaited game.

Louisiana State University was the favorite to win this game and was officially ranked #1. They had a great, undefeated 2011 season with a record of 13-0.  They looked unstoppable. The Monday night game wasn’t the first game this season against Alabama. The two rivals faced off November 5, 2011. That evening, LSU beat Alabama 9-6 in overtime.

Many sports analysts said the University of Alabama was the underdog coming in to the BCS championship game. They were ranked #2 nationally but were looking to revenge their earlier loss to LSU. They also had a great season and were known for their strong defense. Alabama’s record going into the game was 12-1.   Another interesting fact about the game is that the Alabama coach, Nick Saban, was previously the head football coach for LSU.

The BCS Championship game surprised many fans for several reasons.  The game was a shutout with the University of Alabama winning 21-0.  Everyone was expecting a close, exciting game, but it wasn’t.  The University of Alabama scored by making five field goals and one touchdown late in the game. LSU never made it past the 50-yard line until the four quarter.  The strong, confident LSU Tigers we have seen all season, failed to meet the challenge of Alabama’s Crimson Tide.

Temple Run or Mental Fun?

Temple Run or Mental Fun?

January 17, 2012

Grace George, News Editor/Advertisement

Everyone’s talking about it, but what’s so great about the so called “life changing game” Temple Run? LJHS students tell us all about the crazy addiction that’s taking over the country. “Amazing,” Lexi Rich says. “I can’t keep my eyes off my screen,” Rebecca Blair adds in. “Instead of sneaking my phone into class to text, I sneak it in to play Temple Run,” Shelby Heerman admitted. What exactly is Temple Run though and how do you play? You’re about to find out.

Temple Run is an Apple app that you can download on the iPhone, iPod, or iPad. The game is played by swiping your fingers on the screen and moving the device side to side. The goal of the game is to get all of the objectives and get a higher score than all of your friends. Throughout the game, you must jump over trees, slide under fire, and move throughout the temple, all while running from crazy zombie monkeys.

Players call Temple Run the most addicting game around. Bailey Morgan admits, “I’m not very good at Temple Run, but I play a lot throughout the day.” Collin Demourille also confesses he’s an addict, and adds in, “I basically play every day. I play when I’m bored and when I have nothing else to do.” When asked how often she plays, Hayley Odom exclaims, “I play all the time! Yesterday I looked and I’ve played over one thousand times!”

High scores mean everything to gamers, but what exactly is a “good score”? Collin Demourille states, “I don’t think there is a certain score that is a ‘good score’ but most people would probably say around a million is pretty good. My high score is two million, but I work to keep getting higher.” Bailey Morgan also revealed her high score and said it was two hundred thousand. Hayley Odom declared, “Yesterday I got my high score and I’m so happy, I scored 1,443,506.”

Whether you’re scoring in the thousands or the millions, dying from the zombie monkeys or the fires, or playing on your iPhone or iPad, Temple Run is a fun game that people of all ages will love. If you’ve never played it before make sure to try! Don’t get discouraged if you get a bad score because you will keep getting better, you could eventually end up beating your friends. Good luck future gamers, good luck.
